A few months ago, I started wearing a mantilla at Mass.
I was very hesitant about wearing a mantilla. I didn’t want to do it because everyone else was doing it — or because they weren’t. I didn’t want to be boxed into any reductive notion of oppressed femininity. I even had an epic debate with my brain about it…
But I thought it couldn’t hurt to try it, right?
This is pretty much what happened next.
Except of course, replace “I’m a princess and this is my tiara!” with “I’m a Catholic and this is my mantilla!!”
Now, I love wearing a veil at Mass. It’s such a beautiful symbol, it reminds me that Christ is really, truly, substantially present in the Blessed Sacrament, it makes me feel all lovely, feminine, and Catholicky.
I’m not going to lie guys, I rock a mantilla pretty hard.
This Advent, I’m taking part in the Advent Veiling Project with a bunch of fantastic women.
I am very excited! Some will be veiling for the first time, some are discerning, and some are old hands. It doesn’t matter because we’ll all be writing posts about covering before Our Lord!
Even more excitingly, there will be 5 amazing veil giveaways running through December.
I’ll be writing 5 posts, including this one, on wearing my mantilla to Mass: the hows, whys, whethers, and hithertos. Each post will be published when the next giveaway goes live, and I’ll have links down the bottom.
But because this is kind of a cheat post, you should really check out Should I Veil: A Debate Between Me and My Brain (If I have a favourite post here on the blog, it’s probably that one!)
The first giveaway comes from the amazing people at Liturgical Time Veil Shop, where you can pick from one of three appropriately Adventy veils!
