In July 2013, I started wearing a mantilla.
At first, I was very hesitant. I didn’t want to do it just because everyone else was — or just to be different. Neither did I want to be boxed in by someone else’s reductive notion of femininity. I thought it couldn’t hurt to try it, right?
This is pretty much what happened next.
Except of course, replace “I’m a princess and this is my tiara!” with “I’m a Catholic and this is my mantilla!!”
Now, I love wearing a veil at Mass. It’s such a beautiful symbol, it reminds me that Christ is really, truly, substantially present in the Blessed Sacrament, it makes me feel all lovely, feminine, and Catholicky.
I’m not going to lie guys, I rock a mantilla pretty hard.
